Our Worship Tradition

Most parishioners consider St. Stephen’s worship style somewhere between high and low church. Those who attend at 8 o’clock are devoted to this service for various reasons, including the quieter, simpler tone of the service or convenience. Our later Sunday service with music at 10:30 am appeals to many who wish to have a fuller worship experience.

Music plays an important role in our worship, about which more below. There is a Vermont informality in our dress and our propensity to break into applause in response to a piece of music or a joyous announcement.

Special Services

We are famous for our Christmas Eve Pageant, a no-rehearsal cast of any children who wish to take part, which takes place before an SRO congregation of worshippers. Choral Evensong services are held during the year, generally on a quarterly basis.

Holy Week services, including our hosting of Middlebury’s ecumenical Good Friday service, culminate in the Great Vigil of Easter.

We worship joyfully, intently, according to our tradition.
